6 Road Trip Hacks for a Worry-Free Getaway

We’ve been on so many road trips to many destinations in the past few years, so we like to think that we’re getting pretty good at knowing how to do it with minimal hiccups. Want to know our secrets? Check out our list below for 6 road trip hacks for a worry-free getaway:

  1. Invest in or borrow a GPS device:
This one is a lifesaver. Maps are great, but if you’re able to get your hands on a GPS, you will definitely be grateful for it when you take a wrong turn… and believe us, it’s bound to happen at some point. We rely on our GPS a lot when we’re driving to places we’ve never visited. It is beneficial in many ways, depending on the type you use. Our Garmin GPS constantly updates when we’re on the road to let us know of any accidents, slower moving or congested traffic, construction detours, alternative routes, and so much more. This was definitely helpful when we were road-tripping down the East coast to get to Alabama in 2014. The construction in Michigan was crazy, and we had to detour so many times. Our GPS rerouted us within a matter of seconds to give us a seamless route to take to reach our destination without any problems.
  2. Travel with people you get along with:
Yeah, this one is pretty obvious, but it is so true. Could you imagine road tripping with someone you didn’t like? The worst! Fortunately for us, we get along GREAT together – I guess it’s a good thing that we’re married. We know what each other needs in order to stay focused, and we’re respectful and helpful when the other is stressed out or needs to look up something while driving. It also helps the time to pass when you’re driving through miles of farmlands or something very mundane for hours on end when you have someone to play games and be silly with. Be a good team and it will make the trip more enjoyable!
  3. Bring along some good music:
Ok – not everyone has satellite radio, and you can’t always rely on local radio stations when you’re traveling out of town. The next best option? Just bring your own music. Because we often bring a laptop when we go on a trip, that means that we also have our entire music library available to us. Bring along a auxiliary cord and BAM! – you have all of your favourite tunes at your fingertips for the best car karaoke imaginable!
  4. Snacks:
Is this even necessary to explain? Bring snacks! …and bring (non-alcoholic) beverages too, while you’re at it. It’ll preventing you from being hangry…
  5. Maintain your vehicle prior to leaving:
Again, another obvious point, but sh*t happens and you have to be prepared. We often rent a vehicle when we go on road trips. On a recent road trip to the States, we were surprised to find out mid-trip that our tire was low on air. Fortunately, it was a quick fix, but could you imagine if it was a serious engine problem, or something worse – like a brakes issue? Keep on top of your car maintenance, and you’ll have a worry-free experience.
  6. Triple check that you’ve packed everything:
This one is key, even for the most experienced of travelers! Let me share an example. We were on our way to a wedding a few months ago, and ended up driving because it was only 6 hours away. About 2 hours into the trip, a certain someone had the feeling that he was forgetting something. Lo and behold, he looked in the back seat and noticed that his suit was still hanging up in the entrance way at home. That 6 hour trip became a 10 hour trip, and a general pain in the butt. Don’t let a busy mind take advantage of you, friends! Triple-check that you have everything that you need! When road-tripping, don’t be afraid to pack anything that you’ll think you need – you aren’t limited to weight restrictions like when you fly! And, when in doubt, ask your wife (or significant other)! 😉
